Biography
Carl Couchman began photographing at a very early age in Michigan where he grew
up. Learning darkroom technique from books Carl explored the rudiments and got
his first assignment with the local newsaper in 7th grade. Enjoying shooting sports
events lasted through high school. By age 16 Carl began processing and printing
color at home.
After high school Carl went on to study electronics. After graduating Carl moved to
Colorado and worked as a computer repair technician. Next moving to the
mountains Skiing 100 days per year became a huge priority. It was in the mountains
that Carl fell back in love with photography and started working at a custom photo
lab. After 10 years in Colorado Carl moved to California and got a dream job as
manager and custom pirnter for Stictly Black and White photo lab. The owner had
come from Kodak and had brushed shoulders with Ansel Adams a few times. Carl
got a crash course in custom printing and made over 2000 custom 8x10s during the
December rush. After hours Carl began exloring his own negatives and began the
path to mastery of the true craft. Years of self study and workshops with the likes of
John Sexton, Kim Weston, Stu Levy and Don Kirby have helped him hone his craft.
Carls current work explores the textures of the Pacifc oceans edge. Leaning heavily
toward the abstract Carls images captivate and challenge the viewer.
Carls work is held in several private collections and has been shown in numuerous
galleries.
